Agile changes how teams work, but it is the leader who decides whether the change sticks. After a decade of coaching engineering and business teams, the same five habits keep separating leaders whose teams thrive from those whose teams merely comply.

1. Set the outcome, not the task

High-performing teams are told why something matters and trusted with the how. Replace task lists with clear outcomes and success measures, then step back.

2. Make the work visible

A visible board removes the need for status meetings. When everyone can see what is blocked, help arrives before anyone has to ask.

3. Protect focus

Every extra priority is a tax on the whole team. Say no early, say it kindly, and say it often.

4. Coach in the moment

Feedback delivered a quarter later is history. Small, specific and timely conversations change behaviour.

5. Celebrate learning

Retrospectives only work when people feel safe naming what went wrong. Thank the person who raises the uncomfortable point.
